Dwarna — About Us

Founded by a handful of consultant urologists who were tired of sending patients abroad for answers that could be found here.

History & purpose

The association was formed in Iż-Żejtun around a kitchen table, in the home of one of its founding members, after a discussion about how little Maltese urological practice was being written down. The first meetings had no budget and no letterhead — only an agreement that clinical standards should be documented, taught, and defended publicly.

Registration as a voluntary organisation with the Office of the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations gave that agreement a legal shape. Registration ID VO/1309 obliges us to publish annual accounts, hold open general meetings, and account for every donation received.

Today the membership includes consultant urologists, higher surgical trainees, specialist urology nurses, radiographers and medical students. Meetings are still held in Iż-Żejtun. The kitchen table has been replaced, but the habit of arguing carefully over clinical detail has not.

Governanza

Governance & voluntary status

  1. § 1

We are a non-profit medical and professional voluntary organisation. No officer, member or volunteer receives payment for association work. Surpluses are held for education and research and cannot be distributed.

  2. § 2

The association complies with the Voluntary Organisations Act and the guidance issued by the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations. Annual accounts and an activity report are filed each year and made available to members on request.

  3. § 3

Industry support for meetings is accepted only as unrestricted educational grants. Sponsors have no role in selecting speakers, drafting guidance or approving patient material, and all support is declared in the meeting programme.

  4. § 4

Conflicts of interest are declared in writing at the start of each committee term and updated whenever circumstances change.

A voluntary organisation earns its standing twice: once when it is registered, and again every year it publishes accounts nobody is forced to read.
